Think Cooktop Cutouts Are Standard? Think Again.

Similar to my previous post about built-in wall ovens, it's important that customers don't make the mistake of assuming that appliances are standard. This is similarly the case with built-in cooktops. The most common exterior dimensions for a cooktop, whether it be gas or electric, are 30" and 36" with some exceptions. The cutout, however, can vary from cooktop to cooktop. As an example, let's compare two different brands that have 30" cooktop options -

Look closely at the specifications listed above. You'll see in the first image specs for a 30" GE Cooktop and on the bottom a Frigidaire Gallery 30" Cooktop. Between the two, the GE is very specific in what it requires for cutout width and depth, whereas the Frigidaire gives a larger tolerance in its minimum and maximum dimensions. Imagine ordering a cooktop with the assumption they were all standardized, only to find your appliance won't fit in the cutout. That could potentially set you back significantly in time by needing to return the new appliance and find an alternative that would fit, assuming the cooktop wasn't a special order and the retailer lets you return it in the first place.

If you would like to avoid this scenario, I highly recommend you try our CutoutMatch fit finding tool to narrow down the list of options available for your cutout. Inputting your dimensions will show you matches and close matches that can help you save time and effort.
