When I worked in appliance sales, I often had to explain this. If you're shopping for built-in appliances like wall ovens and cooktops, you'll see common sizes like 30", 27", and 24" for wall ovens, and 30" or 36" for cooktops, with a few exceptions. It's crucial to know the outside size of the appliance as a starting point, but remember, just because two appliances have the same outside dimensions doesn't mean their cutout requirements are the same.
Make sure to measure your space to ensure the appliance fits properly. Cutout requirements for wall ovens can differ between brands, and you might even have to tweak your space to fit most modern wall ovens. Each brand provides installation instructions and spec sheets with all the details for each model.
Take these two spec sheets, for example -

Check out the cutout requirements for the Whirlpool and Frigidaire single wall ovens. You'll notice some major differences in the tolerances they allow for the cutout sizes. For instance, the cutout height for the Whirlpool is between 27 1/4" and 29 7/16", while the Frigidaire is between 26 3/4" and 28". The minimum depth is also different, with Whirlpool needing at least 24" and Frigidaire asking for 23 1/2". This really highlights the differences between these two brands.
These differences are what inspired the creation of CutoutMatch and its tools. I wanted to make it simpler for people to find appliances that fit their spaces and save some time in the process. Go ahead and check it out here - Wall Oven Fit Finder
